Traditionally the snail was viewed as a good luck token for those who worked with fire, it provided a ward against fire spirits. If you suffered a burn from the fire or metal you were working with you could use the slime from the foot of the snail to seal the wound and ease the pain, apparently the slime has antiseptic qualities, but I have not tried out this theory myself.

They come supplied with a length of thong.
